Diamond certificates explained for buyers

A diamond certificate is not a guarantee that you will love the stone. It is a structured report that lets everyone talk about the same object with the same reference points.

What the report normally tells you

A diamond report usually records:

• Report number.
• Natural or laboratory-grown origin.
• Shape and cutting style.
• Carat weight and measurements.
• Colour and clarity grade.
• Cut, polish and symmetry grades where relevant.
• Fluorescence.
• Inscription details, if present.

For round brilliant diamonds, cut grade is particularly useful. For fancy shapes like oval, pear, emerald and cushion, the report gives structure, but video and proportions still matter.

GIA vs IGI

GIA is widely treated as the global benchmark for natural diamonds and a strong reference for lab-grown diamonds. IGI is very common for lab-grown diamonds and commercial diamond inventory because turnaround is faster and pricing can be more practical.

Neither name replaces due diligence. You still need to check that the report number belongs to the stone being quoted and that the supplier confirms availability.

Common buyer mistakes

The most common mistakes are:

1. Choosing only by carat weight.
2. Ignoring measurements and face-up spread.
3. Assuming every VS2 is eye-clean.
4. Comparing GIA and IGI grades as if every market treats them identically.
5. Forgetting to check if the stone is still available.
