Round and oval sit right next to each other in current popularity, and the choice between them comes down to a genuine set of trade-offs rather than one being simply "better."

Ovals typically cost somewhere in the region of 10–25% less per carat than a comparable round of the same colour, clarity and quality — a real, structural difference, since round cutting sacrifices more of the original rough diamond to achieve its precise symmetry than an oval does. Sparkle

Round brilliants are cut specifically to maximise light return and are generally considered the benchmark for pure sparkle. Ovals, cut with a similar facet count, can deliver comparable brilliance overall, but the sparkle isn't perfectly even across the stone — smaller facets near the pointed ends and larger ones at the centre mean an oval's sparkle pattern varies slightly by area, and ovals also show the bow-tie effect that round doesn't.

Durability

Both shapes wear well thanks to their rounded outlines and lack of sharp points, but round is genuinely the more durable of the two — its perfectly symmetrical shape has no vulnerable point the way an oval's more elongated curve theoretically can, though in practice this difference rarely matters for everyday wear.
