The 4Cs of Diamonds Explained: Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat
What cut, colour, clarity and carat actually measure, which one matters most for sparkle, and how to prioritise a budget across all four.
Every diamond grading report is built around four measurements, agreed industry-wide since GIA formalised them in the mid-20th century: cut, colour, clarity and carat. They interact β a superb cut can make a lower colour or clarity grade look better than its number suggests β so understanding each on its own is only half the job.
Cut: the one that actually controls sparkle
Cut grade measures how well a diamond's proportions, symmetry and polish return light to the eye β not the shape (round, oval, cushion). A well-cut diamond of a lower colour or clarity grade will often out-sparkle a poorly-cut diamond with "better" numbers everywhere else. If you only prioritise one C, prioritise this one. Colour: graded on an absence, not a presence
Diamond colour is graded D (colourless) through Z (light yellow/brown), judging how little colour is present β not how attractive a colour is. Near-colourless grades (GβI) are effectively indistinguishable from colourless to the naked eye once set, and cost meaningfully less than DβF. Fancy colour diamonds (yellow, pink, blue) are graded on an entirely separate, opposite scale where more colour saturation means higher value.
Clarity: internal and surface characteristics
Clarity grades range from Flawless (FL) through Included (I1βI3), based on inclusions and blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Most inclusions in VS1βSI2 grades are invisible to the naked eye and have no effect on durability β they're a cosmetic and rarity distinction, not a structural one, except in rare cases of large or structurally located inclusions.
Carat: weight, not size
Carat measures weight (0.2 grams per carat), not diameter β two 1-carat diamonds of different cut proportions can look visibly different in size face-up. Price scales non-linearly: diamonds jump in price at psychological weight thresholds (0.50ct, 1.00ct, 2.00ct) because of how the trade prices whole and half-carat sizes, so a diamond just under a threshold (0.90ct, 1.90ct) often represents better value than one just over it.
Prioritising a budget across all four
For maximum face-up sparkle per pound spent: prioritise cut grade first, then choose the lowest clarity grade that's still eye-clean (usually VS2βSI1), then the lowest colour grade that still looks white to you in the metal you're setting it in (often GβI in white metal, FβH in yellow gold, where warmer metal masks a touch more body colour). Carat is the easiest lever to flex once the other three are locked in.
Certification matters as much as the numbers
