Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: What Buyers Need to Know

Chemically identical, priced worlds apart. How lab-grown and natural diamonds compare on origin, certification, value retention and what matters when buying.

Lab-grown and natural diamonds are the same material β€” crystallised carbon, graded on the same 4Cs scale, by the same major labs. The difference is entirely in how they formed and, as a result, how they're priced.

Same chemistry, different origin

A lab-grown diamond is grown in weeks using one of two processes β€” high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapour deposition (CVD) β€” that replicate the conditions under which natural diamonds form over a billion-plus years underground. The result is optically and chemically identical: gemologically, a lab-grown diamond is a real diamond, not a diamond simulant like moissanite or cubic zirconia.

Certification still matters, and still differs

GIA, IGI and other major labs grade lab-grown diamonds against the same 4Cs framework as natural, but every report is explicitly marked "laboratory-grown," and the stone itself carries a laser inscription confirming its origin. The price gap is real, and it's widened sharply

Because a lab can produce an effectively unlimited supply of colourless, high-clarity material, the scarcity that anchors natural diamond pricing doesn't apply. Lab-grown wholesale and retail prices have both fallen sharply and repeatedly since large-scale production ramped up in the late 2010s, and by 2026 a lab-grown diamond of a given size and quality typically trades at a steep discount β€” often somewhere in the range of two-thirds to nine-tenths below a comparable natural stone, depending on size, quality and who's selling. Natural diamond prices, by contrast, have stayed comparatively stable, particularly for larger and rarer stones where scarcity and brand positioning matter more than raw supply.

Value retention is the real trade-off

This is the single most important practical difference for buyers: natural diamonds have historically held resale value far better than lab-grown, precisely because lab-grown supply keeps expanding and prices keep falling. A lab-grown diamond bought today is very unlikely to be worth what was paid for it if resold in a few years β€” buy one to wear, not as a store of value. A natural diamond isn't a guaranteed investment either, but its price floor is anchored by genuine scarcity in a way lab-grown material structurally isn't.

Which one is "better"?

Neither β€” they suit different priorities. Lab-grown buys significantly more size and clarity per pound and carries a smaller environmental and sourcing-diligence footprint. Natural carries rarity, geological history, and materially better long-term value retention. Both are real diamonds, both should always come with independent certification, and the right choice depends on whether you're optimising for size-on-budget or for scarcity and resale.
