Total carat weight vs per-stone weight
When a pair of stud earrings is listed by carat weight, that figure is almost always total carat weight (sometimes shown as CTW or TW) — the combined weight of both stones, not each individual one. A pair listed as "1.00 ct total weight" typically means two diamonds of roughly 0.50 carats each, not two full-carat stones. Always confirm whether a listing means total or per-stone weight before comparing prices between sellers, since a per-stone-weight seller's identical-sounding listing will cost dramatically more.
What makes a pair genuinely "matched"
A well-matched pair has diamonds that read as visually identical side by side — closely aligned in colour, clarity and cut, not necessarily identical on paper. Buy from a dealer who matches pairs deliberately rather than pairing two stones at random from stock; a visible mismatch between the two earrings is far more noticeable in daily wear than most buyers expect going in.
Sizing for everyday wear
Sizes in the 0.50-1.00 total carat weight range are the most common choice for daily wear — noticeable without being heavy or drawing constant attention, and comfortable for extended wear through a full day. Larger total weights suit occasional or evening wear better than daily use.
Backs: screw-back vs push-back
A screw-back post threads into a matching backing for extra security, and is generally the better choice for larger or higher-value stones worn daily, where the cost of losing an earring is meaningful. Push-backs (friction backs) are lighter and easier to put on one-handed, and are a reasonable choice for smaller, lower-value studs.
