Gemstone Treatments Explained: Heat, Oil, Diffusion & More
What heat treatment, oiling, fracture-filling, diffusion and irradiation actually do, which are standard and accepted, and which should always change the price.
Most coloured gemstones sold today are treated in some way β treatment itself isn't a red flag, non-disclosure is. Knowing which treatments are standard trade practice and which are aggressive interventions is the difference between paying a fair price and overpaying for undisclosed enhancement.
Heat treatment β standard, accepted, usually undetectable
Heating sapphires and rubies to improve colour and clarity has been practiced for centuries and is the trade default for both stones. Standard heat (no added elements) is disclosed but not penalised in price the way other treatments are β it's the baseline assumption unless a stone is specifically sold and priced as unheated.
Oiling and fracture-filling β common on emeralds, must be disclosed
Emeralds are almost always oiled (cedar oil or synthetic resin filling surface-reaching fractures) to improve apparent clarity β a practice so standard it's assumed unless a lab report states "no oil" or "insignificant." The degree matters: minor oiling is normal and barely affects value; significant fracture-filling with resin (sometimes disclosed as "clarity enhanced") should carry a meaningfully lower price than a minor-oiled or unenhanced stone of the same visual clarity.
Diffusion β must always be disclosed, changes value dramatically
Beryllium diffusion (used on some fancy sapphires, notably padparadscha and orange/yellow stones) and lattice diffusion introduce colour-causing elements at high heat that penetrate below the surface. This is a far more invasive treatment than standard heat and should always be disclosed and priced well below an equivalent natural or standard-heated stone.
Lead-glass filling β heavily traded, dramatically affects durability
Common on lower-grade rubies, lead-glass filling fills large fractures with a glass-like substance, which can constitute a significant percentage of the stone's visible volume. These stones are dramatically cheaper than natural rubies of similar apparent clarity, are sensitive to heat (a jeweller's torch can damage them) and mild acids, and must always be sold as explicitly lead-glass filled β never as "ruby" without qualification.
Irradiation and dyeing β common on certain stones, always disclosable
Irradiation is standard for producing blue topaz (naturally rare in that colour) and some coloured diamonds, and is considered permanent and stable. Dyeing (used on some jade, chalcedony and lower-grade material) is generally less stable and should always be disclosed β ask specifically whether colour will fade with UV exposure or wear.
The one rule that matters more than any individual treatment
Ask for a written treatment disclosure on every purchase above a token value, and get it from an independent lab report rather than a seller's verbal assurance wherever the stone's value justifies the cost of certification β see our guide to which cert lab to trust.
