How Gemstones Are Priced: Colour, Clarity, Cut, Carat, Origin & Treatment
Coloured gemstones aren't priced like diamonds — colour usually matters more than clarity, and origin and treatment can swing value more than either.
Diamond pricing runs on the well-known 4Cs framework (see our 4Cs guide). Coloured gemstone pricing shares some DNA with that system but weights the factors very differently — and adds two that diamond pricing barely touches: origin and treatment.
Colour is usually the dominant factor
For most coloured stones, colour drives price more than any other single factor — hue, tone (how light or dark) and saturation together. A vivid, well-saturated "pigeon blood" ruby or "royal blue" sapphire commands a dramatic premium over a paler or greyer stone of identical clarity and cut, in a way that has no real diamond equivalent (where colour means the near-total absence of it).
Clarity matters, but the bar is different by stone type
Clarity standards vary hugely by species. Emeralds are graded on a relatively forgiving "eye-clean" standard precisely because they're almost always included (see our treatments guide) — a clarity standard that would be unacceptable in a sapphire is normal for an emerald. Aquamarine and topaz, by contrast, are expected to be very clean, and visible inclusions meaningfully hurt price.
Cut affects value, but consistency across labs is weaker than for diamonds
Coloured stone cutting prioritises colour and weight retention as much as light performance — a cutter will often accept a slightly less "ideal" cut to preserve carat weight or maximise apparent colour, a trade-off diamond cutting rarely makes. There's no equivalent to the diamond cut-grade scale in wide trade use for coloured stones; buyers judge cut quality by eye (symmetry, windowing, extinction) rather than a lab-issued grade.
Carat price isn't linear — and varies by species
Like diamonds, price per carat rises steeply at larger sizes because large fine-quality rough is rarer. But the curve differs by species: fine ruby and sapphire in larger sizes can command extraordinary per-carat premiums, while stones like amethyst or citrine (abundant in large sizes) barely change in per-carat price as size increases.
Origin can be the single biggest price lever
For sapphire and ruby especially, geographic origin can matter more than any other factor once colour and clarity are broadly comparable — a Kashmir sapphire or Burmese ruby of a given colour and clarity can be priced many multiples above a Sri Lankan or Mozambican stone of near-identical face-up appearance, purely on origin and its associated rarity and trade history. Origin determination from a top lab (SSEF, Gübelin) is often the single most value-relevant line on a coloured stone's report.
Treatment status changes the baseline before any of the above apply
An unheated sapphire and a heated sapphire of identical colour and clarity are not comparable stones commercially — treatment status effectively sets which price tier a stone competes in before colour, clarity or origin are even weighed.
