Are Treated Colour Diamonds Worth Buying?
Irradiation and HPHT treatment produce vivid colour at a fraction of natural fancy colour pricing — a different purchase, not a bargain version of the same thing.
Treated colour diamonds are real diamonds with genuinely enhanced colour, sold at prices that can be a small fraction of an equivalent-looking natural fancy colour stone. Whether that's a good buy depends entirely on what you're expecting from it.
How treatment works
Irradiation and HPHT (High-Pressure High-Temperature) treatment are the two main methods used to add or intensify colour in a diamond after it's mined. Irradiation is typically used to produce vivid yellow, blue, green and black colours; HPHT treatment can shift brown diamonds toward colourless, or produce yellow, orange, pink or blue depending on the starting material and conditions used. Both are considered permanent, stable treatments — a treated colour diamond won't fade or revert over time under normal wear.
The price gap is enormous, not marginal
A treated diamond that visually resembles a natural fancy colour stone of a given hue and intensity typically sells for a very small fraction of what the natural equivalent commands — this isn't a modest discount, it's an entirely different price tier, because the two are fundamentally different purchases: one is buying rarity, the other is buying colour alone.
Disclosure is not optional
Treatment status must always be disclosed on any reputable purchase, and gemological labs issue reports that explicitly confirm treated versus natural colour origin — this is precisely the determination our certification guide covers. Never rely on visual assessment or a seller's verbal claim; natural and treated colour can look genuinely identical to the eye.
When treated colour makes sense
If you want a vividly coloured diamond purely for how it looks and don't need the rarity story or resale value that comes with a natural fancy colour stone, treated colour is a legitimate, honestly-priced way to get real diamond with real colour at a fraction of the cost. It's a poor choice if you're drawn to fancy colour diamonds specifically for their rarity or as anything resembling a store of value — treated stones carry meaningfully lower resale value than natural fancy colour, for the same underlying reason lab-grown diamonds do: the scarcity that anchors natural pricing simply isn't there.
