Blue Diamond Buying Guide: Rarity, Origin & the Hope Diamond
Natural blue diamonds owe their colour to trace boron and are dominated by a single mine. What makes them rare, and what to check before buying one.
Blue is one of the rarest and most sought-after fancy diamond colours, with a distinct scientific cause and an unusually concentrated source that shapes the whole market for it.
What causes the colour
The overwhelming majority of natural blue diamonds are Type IIb β defined by trace boron atoms replacing carbon in the crystal lattice, with almost no nitrogen present at all. Boron absorbs red and yellow light, which is what produces the blue you see, ranging from a pale sky blue through to a deep, saturated ocean blue in the most prized stones. This is a genuinely different causation mechanism from pink (structural, not a trace element) or yellow (nitrogen), which is part of why the three colours don't track each other in rarity or price.
A concentrated, specific source
An estimated 90-95% of notable Type IIb blue diamonds trace back to the Cullinan mine in South Africa, making blue diamond supply almost as source-concentrated as pink diamond supply was before Argyle closed β though Cullinan, unlike Argyle, remains in active production. The world's most famous blue diamond, the Hope Diamond, is a Type IIb stone now held in the Smithsonian's collection, and blue diamonds regularly rank among the highest prices ever paid per carat for any gemstone at auction.
What drives value
Saturation is the dominant factor, as with any fancy colour β a deep or vivid blue commands a dramatic premium over a faint or light blue of the same size. Secondary hues matter too: a pure blue is generally valued above a greyish or greenish-blue of similar saturation, though secondary tones are common and not a flaw in themselves, simply a factor in price.
What to check before buying
Confirm natural colour on an independent report before paying a blue diamond premium β irradiation can produce a visually similar blue far more cheaply, and this must always be disclosed (see our treated vs natural colour guide). Given how concentrated genuine natural blue supply is, buy from a dealer experienced specifically in fancy colour diamonds rather than a generalist.
