Fancy Colour Diamonds: Yellow, Pink, Blue & Black Diamond Guide
Fancy colour diamonds are graded on a different scale to colourless diamonds — how hue, tone and intensity drive value, and why saturation is what matters most.
Colourless diamond grading (see our 4Cs guide) runs D to Z, judging how little colour is present. Fancy colour diamonds are graded on the opposite principle entirely: more colour, done well, means more value.
A completely different grading scale
Any diamond falling outside the D-Z colourless-to-light-yellow range is classed as a fancy colour diamond, graded on three separate axes: hue (the primary colour, sometimes with a secondary modifier like "brownish" or "greenish"), tone (how light or dark) and intensity (how saturated). GIA's intensity scale runs from Faint and Very Light through Light, Fancy Light and Fancy, up to Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Dark and Fancy Deep — with Fancy Intense and especially Fancy Vivid commanding the strongest premiums.
Rarity varies enormously by colour
Natural fancy colour diamonds of any real saturation are rare across the board — commonly cited in trade sources as roughly 1 in 10,000 diamonds mined showing enough natural colour to qualify — but rarity within that group varies hugely by hue. Saturated pink, blue and green are generally the rarest and most valuable colours; yellow and brown fancy colours are comparatively more available and priced well below the rarer hues at equivalent size and intensity.
What actually drives value
Intensity is the dominant factor — a Fancy Vivid stone of a given hue routinely commands a dramatic premium over a Fancy or Fancy Light stone of the identical hue and similar size. Clarity and cut matter far less for fancy colour diamonds than for colourless ones; a fancy colour diamond is cut primarily to maximise and even out its colour rather than to optimise brilliance, and buyers tolerate inclusions far more readily than they would in a colourless stone of comparable size.
Certification is essential, not optional
Colour grading a fancy diamond is a genuinely specialised skill, and natural colour must be distinguished from treated colour (irradiated or HPHT-treated diamonds can mimic some natural fancy colours) — always buy against a report from GIA or another major lab that explicitly states the colour is natural, not treated.
