Can Jewellers Tell If a Diamond Is Lab-Grown?
Not by eye, and not with a loupe — lab-grown and natural diamonds are optically identical. What actually detects the difference, and why a report beats an opinion.
No — not reliably, and not without equipment. A lab-grown diamond is chemically and optically identical to a natural one, so there's no colour shift, no brilliance difference, and no visible inclusion pattern that reliably gives it away to the naked eye or under a jeweller's loupe.
What actually detects it
Telling the two apart requires instruments most jewellers don't have on the premises: spectroscopy (photoluminescence and UV-Vis absorption patterns differ subtly between growth methods and natural formation), and specialist screening devices used by gemological labs to flag a stone for further testing. This is lab-grade equipment, not something available at the counter.
The one practical exception: laser inscription
Almost all lab-grown diamonds sold today carry a laser inscription on the girdle — a near-invisible marking, readable only under magnification, that identifies the stone as laboratory-grown and usually references the certificate number. A jeweller with a loupe or microscope can read this inscription in seconds, and it's genuinely the fastest practical way to confirm origin without sending a stone away for testing. The FTC's jewellery guidance treats clear disclosure of lab-grown origin as a legal requirement in the US, which is part of why the inscription convention is so consistently followed by legitimate sellers.
What this means for you as a buyer
Never rely on a seller's assurance alone, and don't assume a jeweller "would be able to tell" if something were off — they generally can't, by eye. Buy against an independent lab report every time (see our certification guide), and if you're ever buying a loose stone secondhand or without paperwork, ask specifically whether the girdle has been checked for an inscription before you rely on anyone's visual assessment.
