Side Stone Cuts
Side stones are the smaller accent stones flanking a centre stone, rather than a faceting style in their own right — this hub groups cuts by that buyer intent (which shapes work well as side/accent stones) rather than by facet arrangement.
What distinguishes this family
Unlike the other hubs, this is a usage-based grouping, not a faceting family: an emerald cut, marquise and princess have three different facet styles and outlines, but all three are commonly chosen as side stones because they pair cleanly alongside a centre stone or interlock along a row.
Cuts in this family
The emerald cut is a rectangular (or square) step cut, with the corners trimmed off and long, parallel facets running in "steps" rather than the triangular/kite facets of a brilliant.
A marquise is a long, narrow, brilliant-faceted shape with two symmetrical points, resembling a boat hull or an eye shape.
A princess is a square, brilliant-faceted shape with sharp, uncropped corners, combining the sparkle of a round brilliant with a geometric square outline.
Buying considerations
- Matching side stones for colour and cut consistency matters more than for a single centre stone — buy them as a matched set where possible.
- Elongated side stones (marquise, baguette) along a band need protective settings at their points — the same vulnerability as when used as a centre stone, concentrated at both ends.
- Side stone carat weight is typically quoted as a total (e.g. "0.50ct total side stones") rather than per-stone — confirm which before comparing prices.
Jewellery uses
Eternity bands, trilogy/three-stone rings, and halo settings are the most common uses; tapered baguettes and trapezoids (not yet in the Cut Library) are traditional pairings alongside emerald and radiant centre stones.
