Diamond Fluorescence: Is It Good or Bad?
Neither, on its own — fluorescence can make a lower colour grade look whiter, or make a high-colour stone look hazy. What actually determines which.
Short answer: fluorescence is neither inherently good nor bad — it depends on the specific stone, its colour grade, and the strength of the effect.
What fluorescence actually is
Fluorescence is a diamond's tendency to emit a soft glow (most commonly blue) when exposed to ultraviolet light, such as daylight or a UV lamp. It's caused by trace elements in the crystal structure and is graded on a scale from None through Faint, Medium, Strong and Very Strong on most lab reports.
Why blue fluorescence can actually help
Blue is the visual opposite of the faint yellow tint that lower colour grades show — so blue fluorescence can partially cancel out that yellow tint under UV-rich daylight, making the stone read as whiter than its colour grade alone would suggest. This effect is most useful for diamonds in the I–M colour range, where medium-to-strong blue fluorescence can make the stone look like a meaningfully higher colour grade without the price tag that grade would normally carry.
Why it can also hurt
In a small minority of stones — genuinely rare, occurring in well under 1% of fluorescent diamonds — strong fluorescence can make the stone look hazy or "oily," similar to the milky/cloudy effect. This is the specific risk worth checking for on video, not something to assume will happen just because a stone has strong fluorescence.
The effect on price
Any level of fluorescence tends to reduce a diamond's price somewhat, more so as the fluorescence gets stronger — medium-to-strong blue fluorescence commonly prices 10–15% below an equivalent non-fluorescent stone. For high colour grades (D–F) at larger sizes, buyers and the market generally prefer no fluorescence at all, so the discount is more pronounced there; for lower colour grades where fluorescence's whitening effect is genuinely useful, the same fluorescence is far less of a drawback and can represent real value.
The practical takeaway
If you're buying a lower colour grade (I and below) specifically for budget reasons, blue fluorescence up to Medium or Strong is worth actively considering rather than avoiding — it's real, functional value. If you're buying a high colour grade for its own sake, no fluorescence is the safer, more conventional choice. Either way, check the specific stone on video if fluorescence is Strong or Very Strong, since that's where the small hazy-appearance risk actually lives.
