Asterism Explained: Star Sapphires and Star Rubies
What causes the six-rayed star inside a star sapphire or star ruby, why it only shows on a cabochon cut, and what to look for when buying one.
A star sapphire or star ruby shows a moving, six-rayed star of light across its rounded surface β one of the more striking optical effects in gemology, and one that depends entirely on how the stone formed and how it's cut.
What causes the star
Asterism comes from needle-like inclusions of rutile (titanium dioxide) trapped inside the corundum crystal as it forms deep underground. In corundum's trigonal crystal structure, these rutile needles align in three sets at 120Β° to each other β when light hits the stone, it reflects off all three sets simultaneously, producing the classic six-rayed star. Slow cooling during the crystal's formation is essential: cool too fast and the rutile needles don't have time to grow and align, and no star forms at all.
Why it only shows on a cabochon
Asterism only appears on a smooth, domed cabochon cut β never on a faceted stone. The rounded surface is what lets the star sit visibly at the dome's apex and move as the stone or the light source turns; flat facets would scatter the same reflections in a way that never resolves into a coherent star. This is why you'll never see a star effect on a standard faceted sapphire, however fine the rough β the cutter has to choose between faceting for brilliance or cutting en cabochon to preserve the star.
What to look for when buying
A well-centred, sharp, symmetrical star with all six rays reaching close to the girdle is the key quality marker β a faint, off-centre, or broken star is a lower-grade stone regardless of the base colour.
