How to Spot a Fake or Synthetic Gemstone

Simple at-home checks — inclusions, the fog test, weight, heat conductivity — and where they stop working, plus what actually distinguishes synthetic from simulant.

"Fake" covers two genuinely different things in the gem trade: a simulant (a different material made to look like the real thing — glass, cubic zirconia) and a synthetic (a lab-grown version of the actual mineral, chemically identical to its natural counterpart). Telling them apart matters, because the tests that catch one often miss the other entirely.

Simple checks you can do at home

  • Inclusions. Natural stones usually carry tiny internal characteristics — crystals, feathers, growth lines. A stone that looks perfectly flawless to the naked eye is worth a closer look under magnification: it's either an exceptionally fine natural stone, a synthetic (which can be grown far cleaner than nature typically produces), or a simulant.
  • The fog test. Breathe on the stone as you would on a mirror. A genuine gemstone clears within a second or two; glass tends to stay foggy for several seconds longer, because glass is a poorer heat conductor.
  • Weight. Most genuine gemstones are noticeably denser than glass or resin imitations of the same apparent size — a stone that feels suspiciously light in the hand is worth further checking.
  • Heat conductivity. Touch the stone briefly to your lip or cheek. Gemstones conduct heat away from skin quickly and feel cool; glass and plastic sit closer to room temperature and feel comparatively warm.

Where home tests stop being useful

None of these tests reliably distinguish a natural stone from a synthetic of the same species — a lab-grown sapphire is chemically real corundum, so it fogs, weighs and conducts heat exactly like a natural one. Home tests are good for catching simulants (glass, cubic zirconia, plastic) but essentially useless for catching a well-made synthetic. What actually catches a synthetic

A gemmologist with a refractometer, spectroscope and microscope can identify most synthetics from growth patterns invisible to the naked eye — curved striae in flame-fusion synthetic corundum, for instance, versus the angular growth zoning natural corundum shows. This is squarely a job for a lab, not a home test kit.

The one reliable answer: certification

Every stone sold through a reputable dealer should be sold and priced honestly as natural, synthetic, or simulant; if a seller is vague about which of the three you're buying, treat that vagueness itself as the red flag.
